Frequently Asked Questions

Frequent Questions About Ice Balloons

  • 1. What are Ice Balloons™ made of?

Ice Balloons™ are made from extra-thick, durable latex that’s designed to hold 15 to 20 pounds of water. They’re built to freeze into a solid block and break cleanly when you're ready to use them.

  • 2. How do I use an Ice Balloon™?

Just fill it with cold water, tie a tight knot, and place it flat on a tray or board in your freezer. After 48 hours, wrap the frozen balloon in a towel and break it on a hard surface. Pour the chunk ice into your cooler, and you're ready to go.

  • 3. Can I reuse Ice Balloons™?

No. Ice Balloons™ are designed for one-time use. When you break the frozen balloon, both the ice and the balloon are meant to be used and discarded.

  • 4. How long do they take to freeze completely?

We recommend freezing Ice Balloons™ for a full 48 hours. This gives the entire water volume time to solidify into a dense block for the best cooling performance.

  • 5. Do I need to fill them all the way?

No. You can adjust how much water you use based on the size of your cooler or how much ice you need. Just leave some air space to allow for expansion during freezing. Typically filling it the size of a standard basketball is about as full as you will want to fill it up.

  • 6. What happens if I overfill one?

Overfilling can cause the balloon to stretch too thin or even burst in the freezer. Make sure to leave a small air gap to prevent pressure buildup as the water expands.

  • 7. How do Ice Balloons™ compare to store-bought ice?

Ice Balloons™ last longer, perform better, and cost less over time. They freeze into a variety of chunk sizes that cool faster and melt slower than traditional cube bags.

  • 8. Do I need a special freezer to use Ice Balloons™?

No. You can use any standard full-size freezer with a flat surface. Just avoid placing the balloon directly on wire racks or grates, which can cause uneven freezing.

  • 9. Can I fly with Ice Balloons™? Yes.

Ice Balloons™ are safe for airline travel when empty. They can be packed in your luggage and filled after you arrive at your destination.

  • 10. Can I freeze them in a mini fridge or hotel freezer?

We don’t recommend using mini fridge freezers. Most are too small or underpowered to fully freeze the large volume of water inside an Ice Balloon™.

  • 11. Are Ice Balloons™ safe for food coolers?

Yes. Once broken and poured, the ice is made from regular water and can be used in coolers with food, drinks, or perishable items.

  • 12. What’s the best way to store them before use?

Empty Ice Balloons™ can be stored flat in a drawer, gear bin, or bag. Once filled, place them on a tray or board in the freezer to keep them level while freezing.

  • 13. Can I use Ice Balloons™ for camping or fishing trips?

Absolutely. They’re ideal for outdoor use, helping coolers stay colder longer on multi-day trips without the need to restock ice from local stores.

  • 14. How do I break the frozen Ice Balloon™ safely?

Wrap it in a towel and strike it on a solid surface like a driveway or porch. Avoid using tools or sharp objects. The towel helps contain the broken balloon and control the ice chunks.

  • 15. Do Ice Balloons™ messy?

No. Once broken and poured into your cooler, the ice behaves like regular ice chunks. The balloon itself is discarded after breaking, so there's no extra packaging to manage or worry about.
